What is Nephrology?

Nephrology is a branch of medical science that studies the anatomy, function, and diseases of the kidneys.  A nephrologist is a medical doctor who received additional training to care for the kidneys.

Why see a Nephrologist?

There are several conditions that may warrant a visit to the nephrologist. Your primary care physician may refer you to a nephrologist because of the following conditions:

  • Hypertension
  • Chronic kidney disease
  • Dialysis
  • Acute kidney injury
  • Kidney stones
  • Electrolyte imbalance
  • Polycystic kidney disease
